When I think about it, I wonder why we do that? We obviously know His name. I guess there's something intriguing or enticing that tempts one to use the name in vain? I have no idea. I mean we don't usually say anything like " Oh my Buddah!" Right? Nope, I have never heard that. Or, what about the well known phrase, " I swear to God." To be honest, I am no pastor so I have minimal thoughts about the subject but I do know that somewhere in the bible it says not to swear to God and to let your yes be yes and no be no....
Bottomline folks, don't use the name of God disrespectfully. Think before saying His name. Are we saying it to glorify Him like " Praise Jesus". Or, are we saying it to dishonor Him by yelling out in anger or frustration J....C.....!? Can you imagine how you feel when other people use your own name in a negative way? I am guessing we don't get too happy huh? Yup, that must be how God feels.
Leviticus 19:12 ESV
You shall not swear by my name falsely, and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord.
Exodus 20:7 ESV
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
Ephesians 4:29 ESV
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
James 5:12 ESV
But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.
