Let me guess. Did the song, Toxic by Britney Spears just come to mind? Or, maybe the remake of the song by Alex and Sierra. Winners of X-Fator 2013. I don't really watch this show. Wait, is it still on? This singing couple really is what kept me and Joe watching the show.
Anyway, this couple and their song is really not the focus of today's writing. The focus of today's writing is this. Think about the people you choose to spend your time with. Ask yourself if these people are bad influences in your life. Do they even know they are toxic to your life? What about you? Are you addicted to them? Do you know they are toxic?
What comes to mind are my friends I had more than 20 years ago. Nope, not going to name any names. I will say that I did know these friends before I knew Christ as Lord!
The timeline goes something like this. I ended up getting, influenced by their bad behavior. The word " Toxic" comes to mind. So, the years spent with them went by.
Then came the summer of 1995. That was the year my life changed for the best! I was reminded of what I knew before. However, this time it was different.
How so, you may ask? Good question. Well, the summer of '95 was when I accepted Jesus as personal Lord and savior.
Sometime in my life, well maybe more than some time. Actually, I just read one morning a devotional that reminded me of this particular thing.
Folks, who are we choosing to hang around with? Earlier, I had mentioned that I hang around with a not so good crowd. They were bad influences on me
I knew they were bad influences on me. But, I was a kid that did not care. I didn't even know God yet planned however come God knew me. And, I don't think he did not like who I was hanging around with.
So, I was being disobedient and stubborn. God knew it too. And, He knew that I was not going to change my friends.
Then, God allowed something to happen. I guess he did it because I was being disobedient and stubborn. So he though, it was time to go do some drastic measures. And that's what he did.
I don't want to go into details or specifics. But, I will say that an incident happened Involving the cops. That, in turn, was my wake up call. Yep, and because of the incident? Basically, God got what he wanted.
Actually, because of that was also the reason I was able to know more about Jesus. So, it was a win-win for me! What does the Bible say about that?
1 Corinthians 15:33
Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”
Proverbs 16:28
A dishonest man spreads strife, and a whisperer separates close friends.
Matthew 5:30
And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.
Proverbs 22:24-25
Make no friendship with a man given to anger, nor go with a wrathful man, lest you learn his ways and entangle yourself in a snare.
Proverbs 13:20
Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer.
