Why Pay Taxes‽

Play For The Audio Version

Have you guys ever just stopped and thought why is it that you pay taxes? I remember when I used to be in the work force, I thought like that. I really didn't understand why after working so hard day in and day out, I had to give most of my money back to the government.

Well, today 20+ years later I got my answer. In full elaboration. The book of Romans Chapter 13 says some good stuff.

First off, we all really need to understand that whoever our authority is has been given to us by God. The Bible says in Romans 13 vs 1: Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God

Then, once that is in your mind? We need to think about always following this authority. Romans 13 verse 2 says: Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

Ooh, definitely don't want to make God mad. Nope, do not want to be doing any rebelling against the authority He put in my life! And, don't think I would like to know anything about that thing about "judgement on themselves part."

Please don't misunderstand. Yes, God wants us to follow the authority down here on the Earth. However, I don't believe he would like us to follow the authority if it is against him our Almighty father. The Supreme Authority!

For example if your authority is telling you to do something that is against the will of God? Then, you know what you are to do. First Obey and Follow God!

Why would God allow the authorities to ask us to do something that is against God's will? I don't know. Perhaps, maybe he wants to see what people would choose to do?

Remember, I really don't know. Total guess. Probably a question I should jot down that I would need to ask God when I see him.

Let me end my writing with words from the bible about paying taxes. Romans 13:6 says: This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

Hebrews 13:17

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.

Acts 5:29

But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.

Titus 3:1

Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work
