Is Sports For Everyone?
I like Sports. Ever since I was 13 years old and was taken to my first Chicago White Sox baseball game, (yes Sam used to be a Chicago White Sox fan.) I remember my childhood friend Jennifer used to be a diehard Cubs fan. I told her I will never be a Cubs fan. Yup I know look at me now. She moved away and I'm sad to say we lost touch but if she saw me now she'd be so proud lol. Then, I started being an avid Bulls fan. As, I got older I started watching football Then, Fantasy Sports started to become the past time. I began with Fantasy Basketball and ended up doing that for 9 years and still haven't chosen to retire even after winning first place one year. I then heard fantasy football is fun because you really only have to set your line up once a week. So, I tried that and now I'm hooked. I never reality had a passion to try fantasy hockey. I think because of my eyes getting really bothered when I watch the games. That was probably a big part of it. We still turn on the TV sometimes when hockey games are on but I usually just listen to the announcers. Then, last year I did something I never thought I would do and joined fantasy baseball. I ended up winning first place, beginners luck? I told Joe I'm going to retire from fantasy baseball, and he said why?
I think the important thing to remember is to first know that these players are not exactly a carved image you're worshiping. But, maybe we should keep in mind how much of a priority these players do indeed get. Particularly over God? I think by your answers you can distinguish if sports should be one of your leisures right?
One thing I try not to do, and you may be occasionally one to have this as well. And that is letting the players performances get to you. You understand what I mean? The stupid mother **** football player threw an interception! Are you effing kidding me! Steve Bartman!! ( Cubs fan everyone knows that caught the ball that stopped them from going to the World Series) Errr... Or, how about this one? "This game or so and so player is so effed up! Wow, sound familiar? I haven't yet felt God say to my heart, ( Ok Sam, no more sports for you!) But, sometimes I think it might be close. Until he speaks to my heart, I want to keep enjoying watching sports and show others that we can still keep our cool when the players don't seem too cool and really mess up.
I believe Sports is a good way to exit the real worlds stresses and just enjoy it. Unless we are closely linked and I mean like in real life linked to these players, then do they really matter to us or affect us? I guess if you have money riding on players' performances it's a different story. I'm just saying I think it's important to be aware of how into this leisure you really are. I have talked to a couple guys who absolutely loved sports, watching and playing. But, they told me they noticed how their reactions were and how deeply and negatively into the game they would be. They would say bad words all the time, and they would just get so mad. It encourages me so much to hear they gave that leisure up even though it was difficult.
These players were blessed with incredible and amazing skills they were born to do! And, it's our entertainment! When, some of these players give the glory of their success back to God and acknowledge what He allowed and let the whole world know too. What an awesome example and I love it! Seriously, that just makes me smile! :-)
1 Corinthians 9:25
Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.
Hebrews 12:1
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
Exodus 20:4
“You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.
