Today I want to write about teaching them. Who is the "them" I'm talking about? I'm talking about your children, or children in general.
I really am not too knowledgeable or able to understand fully the minds of children because, well, I don't have a child here on Earth. I am pretty sure when I am reunited with Silas Timothy in heaven I will have my share of experiences being a mother, minus all the bad and negative stuff. :-)
I just want to offer some thoughts to parents that maybe will advise, help, or maybe even stimulate your own thinking. I gather that being a parent here on Earth has its time of rejoicing, celebration, difficulties, and responsibilities or teaching moments.
Parents, think about it. You guys should be the ones to teach your kids about anything. I'm more leaning towards when your kids are really young and don't really know anything yet.
Nowadays, maybe some parents miss out on teaching opportunities to their children because of our culture and, sadly to say, all due to Society. I'm really thinking about television, the radio, and the Internet.
I was in my teen years when the internet was becoming more available and, slowly but surely, entering the minds of people. It has, by now, exploded. Do we have a problem? Do we need an answer to something? The name Google can be found in the majority of people's homes and even now on their cell phones.
Parents, see what I mean? Your children really do need you. Maybe for some cash!? LOL. But, is your heart telling you to fix that? I remember I knew someone who chose not to have a television in their home. I'm sure you can guess why that was. That was their decision. I'm definitely not saying that you should get rid of your television and put it up on eBay. No, I'm not telling you that. That was what God was putting in his heart to do.
I want to share an example of something that really encouraged me. Listen to this! This was about my husband's cousin Martin. Martin is a devoted born again Christian and follower of Jesus Christ. One day, he was sharing with me his decision not to watch sports anymore. He used to watch them all the time.
Martin saw what watching Sports was doing to his relationship with God. I won't go too deep into detail of what it made him do. But, just know that Martin knew it was hurting his relationship with Christ. I admire Martin for eliminating Sports if he knew what it really was doing to him. And, it is so admirable because he did not want his little boy to see how watching sports was hurting his relationship with Jesus.
Please don't misunderstand, because it definitely is not a sin to watch sports. I watch sports. The question you have to ask yourself is how is sports really affecting your relationship with Christ?
Anyway, back to the subject of teaching your children. You guys, and all the parents out there, let me ask you something. Fellow Believers in Christ, are you bringing up your child in ways where you are sharing your love of Christ?
If you are not, maybe you should. I am thinking those types of teaching moments should begin with the parents. Parents, you need to remember that there are other avenues your children may utilize to get some answers to questions they may have. Before your children get false or highly distorted answers, you as parents should get to your children first. I mean I know there are good education tools out there like the letter people on Sesame Street and stuff, but there also are not.
Are you the cool parent? Are you the type of parent that makes it comfortable for your children to speak to you about anything? Those kind of parents are cool in my book.
