Genesis Series Part 69: Playing Pretend

Remember how we talked about Jacob stealing the birthright and blessing that was supposed to go to Esau? Anyway, if you guys forgot, that's okay. I was just going to elaborate more on that on the writing today.

Do you guys do that? Or, did you guys ever do that? Maybe you're doing that now? Or you plan on doing that in the future? I'm sorry I'm talking about playing pretend.  Just the word sounds like a devious and mischievous thing. Doesn't it? I think it does. What do you guys think?

When one plays pretend it's like they're hiding from exposing their true self. Physically and mentally. I guess playing pretend is okay sometimes. I'm thinking right now of Halloween.  You know who was playing pretend in the Bible in the Book of Genesis? Jacob in his young adult years, I believe. Let me share something with you guys.

Remember I told you the birthright and the blessing go to the firstborn?  Well, in the family of Isaac, Rebekah, and their two sons Jacob and Esau, the oldest son was Esau and he deserved to get the blessing and the birthright. Isaac was getting old in his years so his eyesight was not very good.

For some reason Rebekah wanted Jacob to receive the blessing that Isaac was going to give. Isaac told his son Esau to hunt some game for him and to prepare a delicious meal for him.  Rebekah heard her husband talking to Esau and telling him what he needed to do so he can receive the blessing.

Pause break. Hi to Allie. It so reminds me of the character from New Girl. Allie, I pray you will be encouraged by the writings. And, thank you for giving me my purse. Hello, also to Sam. Not me, but this guy named Sam. I had spilled the water a little. Tiny was not here so I asked him if he can get me some napkins. Then when he told me his name was Sam.  I said we have awesome names! Sorry I missed on the high five LOL  Thank you for the napkins and I pray you will be encouraged by all of my writings!

So, Rebekah, her and her devious self did something pretty mischievous. She relayed all that Isaac said to Esau and told Jacob everything. Not only did she tell Jacob what to do, but she helped Jacob in their plan to fool Isaac with their little playing of pretend.

The first thing she had Jacob do was dress and act the part of playing his brother. He put like a Halloween costume on to get ready to play pretend. I can't remember where he got some fur, but he ended up putting fur all over his face and body. Just in case Isaac was going to touch him.

The next thing he did was another devious thing. Wel,l actually we can blame this one on Rebekah. She was the one that had that delicious meal Isaac was asking for. Strike 2?

Finally, this is what happened. Jacob, with his hairy face and body, went to his father Isaac and disguised his voice and said father I'm here. He said he was Esau. Isaac kind of didn't believe him I think because he said his voices kind of off.

Isaac told Jacob to come closer so he can feel him. Isaac said the voices was off but since his face and body was all furry, they got him. Isaac fell deeper and deeper into this devious scheme really concocted by Rebekah.

Then, after Jacob gave the delicious delicacy, Isaac ate the meal. And, when he was done he was ready to give the blessing. So, the rest of the story goes like this. He gave the blessing to Jacob. Esau did all the stuff that Isaac told him to do. When he got to Isaac and said he's ready for his blessing, Isaac said that he no longer has any blessing.  He gave it to his brother who pretended to be Esau. You can imagine how mad Esau was.

So, playing pretend for the wrong reasons was probably a bad idea.  I think Jacob, who became Israel, could've had a better life (you know, with not losing Joseph and everything) and a better relationship with is brother Esau, but in the end, God's will was done.  It had to happen because God needed it to happen.

Here is how Esau lost his Birthright:  Genesis 25:19-34  This one is on Esau.
